Hall of Fame players are always the safest bet for card collectors…especially their rookie cards. This year three superstars are being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Chances are you could have two of the cards in the post, but only the few lucky ones of us can have all three.

Buying Old Packs of Baseball Cards

I never really understood the rationale behind buying old packs of cards. If you get a wax pack, chances are that it has been picked through and resealed or someone figured out the distribution of the cards within the box (2nd pack down on the upper left contains the Clemens rookie). If we’re talking rack or cello packs, someone has probably already figured out the sequencing of cards based on the cards that are showing.

About ten years ago I learned this lesson the hard way. A huge fan of 80s baseball cards, I bought a rack box of 1984 Topps baseball which is one of my favorite sets of all time. I was happy to get a few Nolan Ryans and Cal Ripken Jrs but with over a thousand cards in the box I was especially hoping for at least a couple of Don Mattingly and Daryl Strawberry rookies. I didn’t pull a single one of either. I did however pull about five Spike Owen and Andy Van Slyke rookie cards. Bad luck…I think not. I’ve chalked it up to a lesson learned.

I really wish this wasn’t the case because I could think of few things more fun than busting open a pack of 1980 Topps and finding the Rickey Henderson rookie.

As far as star power, the 2009 Football Hall of Fame Class is one of the weakest ever. However, any respectable collector should take note of any Hall of Fame players.

The 1970s were a transitional decade for card collecting. Though the hobby hadn’t quite hit the bubble of the 1980s, card production went up and Topps started to produce factory sets. The quality of the sets was uneven over the years and there were fewer great rookies than other decades. However, some great cards were issued in the 70s.
